The exhibition “Aufbrüche – Abbrüche. 250 Jahre Friedrich Hölderlin” is one of the largest exhibitions in the anniversary year and at the same time the first show in the new annexe to the Württemberg State. Part of the library, the Hölderlin archive holds 80% of all original Hölderlin manuscripts anywhere in the world. Ina Bauer and Simon Busse developed an exhibition concept on the more than 300 sqm that combines graphics, furniture design, technology and, last but not least, sustainability to create a holistic spatial experience.

 

The striking graphic appearance of the anniversary year, consisting of glyphs derived from Hölderlin's handwriting, is also widely visible as part of the scenography. The handwriting of the exceptional poet leads through the room and to the exhibits - turning the exhibition space of the Württemberg State Library into an extended reading room!

 

Within these spatial structures, Hölderlin is made accessible to visitors in different ways - or rather, the way of reading him. The diachronic presentation makes it also possible to decipher digitally Hölderlin's writing chronologically and in detail. A specially developed augmented reality reader "scans" the manuscript pages and makes them readable and comparable, thus leading them into the present. Visitors can take their Hölderlin home in a completely analogous way: Loose issue papers which could amplify the gained knowledge about Hölderlin are available in the exhibition. They can be collected and bound into an own copy at the bookbinding station.
